How Technology Is Changing Chess Training

The Foundation of Chess Tactics

Chess is 99% tactics. No matter how brilliant your strategic plan is, a single tactical oversight can lose the game. Here are the 5 essential tactical motifs you must master:

1. The Pin

A pin occurs when an attacking piece threatens an opponent's piece, which cannot move without exposing a more valuable piece behind it. The saying goes: "The pinned piece is paralyzed."

2. The Fork

A fork is a double attack where one piece simultaneously attacks two or more enemy pieces. Knights and Queens are particularly notorious for devastating forks.

3. The Skewer

Often called a "reverse pin," a skewer happens when a valuable piece is attacked and forced to move, exposing a less valuable piece behind it to capture.

4. The Discovered Attack

This tactic involves moving a piece out of the way to unleash an attack from a friendly piece behind it (usually a Bishop, Rook, or Queen). It often catches opponents completely off guard.

5. The Double Check

A special and extremely powerful type of discovered attack where the moving piece ALSO gives check. The opponent is forced to move their King, as they cannot block or capture two attacking pieces simultaneously.
